Administrative Professional Development Program

Virginia Tech classified and university staff in pay bands 2-3 who perform a variety of duties including office management, bookkeeping, project management and supervision of other administrative personnel. 

 

 

Program Summary

This program, formerly known as the Office Managers Development Group, was established in 1996. Members of each cohort are provided the opportunity to exchange ideas and to develop skills and abilities. Participants become more valuable to their departments through an increased knowledge of campus policies, procedures and programs, enhanced supervisory and communication skills, and greater confidence in carrying out their complex roles. Participants will be asked to commit approximately 2 - 3 hours of their work schedule per month and attend a minimum of 6 scheduled APDP sessions in order to receive a Certificate of Completion.  Advantages to members of the APDP program include:

  • Access to a network of other administrative professionals for exchanging advice and ideas 
  • Added value to departments through increased knowledge of campus policies, procedures and programs
  • Improved supervisory and communication skills and abilities 
  • Development of greater confidence in carrying out complex administrative roles

Program Schedule

The APDP class is active between September and May of each year.  The group meets on the second Thursday of each month from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in Southgate Center, Room 142. Meetings include presentations on leadership, communication and other activities.

Nomination Information: 

The nomination period opens in July and closes in August. Nominees selected to participate in the current class will be notified within one week after the close of nominations. If you are interested in participating, please discuss with your immediate supervisor.  If you are a manager and would like to nominate someone from your department, please complete the nomination form found on this page and return to UOPD, 148 Southgate Center (0538).
