Action Learning Teams

Action Learning Teams are composed of four to five current scholars in the Executive Development Institute. The goal is to allow the participants an opportunity to grapple with important challenges and opportunities specific to Higher Education and the various crises faced. They will learn to apply analytical tools and formal knowledge to specific challenges associated with human resources, communications, or finances by focusing on a recent issue and developing a case study. This learning is viewed as more useful than traditional classroom learning because the experiences are grounded to actual organizational issues.

The case study generates a collaborative action learning environment so individuals can learn from each other and reflect on the ways in which they are applying newly acquired knowledge and skills to the problems and issues associated with their team project. Participants are able to learn first-hand about the implementation challenges facing organizations, thus leading to improved management and leadership skills by the team members. A group coach is assigned to each team to help balance their tasks, processes and action with reflection and learning.

Mentoring Phase

The mentoring phase is a process that will allow the scholar to speak with their direct supervisor in regards to their professional development. This goal setting process should be similar to what takes place for annual reviews in most departments and colleges. As we know with busy schedules many times this does not take place. This mentoring process is designed to foster this interaction of professional development and provide the accountability of intentionally identifying mentors for the scholar.  The mentoring phase will extend over the course of seven (7) months or 20 hours beginning in August 2009.  Your focus should be to achieve the goals that you identify with your supervisor.
